envimelt ID2108

Biodegradable and heat-stable compound for injection moulding and 3D printing

envimelt ID2108

is a mineral-filled injection moulding grade for biodegradable food contact packaging applications. envimelt ID2108 from NOPAR International GmbH is more temperature resistant than injection moulding grades which are mainly based on PLA (polylactide).

Properties

  • Partially crystalline structure with defined DSC melting points for envimelt
  • High strength and stiffness
  • High, but controllable Water Vapour Transmission Rate (WVTR)
  • Good processability on conventional injection moulding machines, e.g. for PP
  • Printable
  • Sealable
  • Easy to dye

Due to the moisture sensitivity of PLA at melt temperatures in the order of approx. 200 °C, we must ensure a maximum moisture content of less than 1,000 ppm before injection moulding. Tests are always recommended to assess the quality of the final product. envimelt ID2108 meets the requirements of the European standard DIN EN 13432 for compostable and biodegradable polymers up to a sheet thickness of 0.447 mm. Depending on the application, higher wall thicknesses are possible after additional testing. The biodegradation process in the soil depends on the specific environment, as the product can be degraded by microorganisms (climate, soil quality, population of microorganisms).

Food law Status

envimelt ID2108 is one of the few compostable polymers whose composition complies with the European food law for food contact as well as with the regulations of the US Food and Drug Administration for food packaging. A specific food law status can be verified in our certificates prepared for this purpose, which are available on request from NOPAR International GmbH in Bremen. However, the processor or packer must always check the suitability of the product for its application.

Delivery and storage

envimelt ID2108 is supplied dry and ready for use in moisture-proof cylindrical or flat pellets. Its bulk density is 0.9 g/cm³. The standard packaging is a 25 kg special bag. Other forms of packaging are also possible by arrangement. All containers are tightly sealed and should only be opened immediately before processing. To ensure that the material, which is delivered completely dry, cannot absorb moisture from the air, the containers must be stored in dry rooms and always carefully sealed after portions have been removed. envimelt ID2108 has a shelf life of 12 months at 23 °C in the undamaged bags. Containers stored in cold rooms should equalize to normal temperature (min. 20 °C) before processing so that no condensation forms on the pellets.

Quality control:

envimelt ID2108 is manufactured as a standard material in a continuous production process according to DIN EN ISO 9001 : 2000. The melt volume flow rate, MVR, at 190 °C, 2.16 kg, according to ISO 1133 has been defined as a specified parameter for quality control. A certificate of MVR value can be supplied with each batch number on request. Other data, included in our literature, are typical values that are not part of our product specification for envimelt ID2108.

Application:

Injection mouldable products made from envimelt ID2108 are characterized by an optimal ratio of stiffness and toughness. envimelt ID2108 is very versatile in all applications for injection moulding and 3D printing. It also enables customers to produce biodegradable plastic parts on conventional injection moulding machines. With our innovative envimelt ID2108, it is not only possible to fill delicate thin-walled moulds, but also to achieve cycle times comparable to those of standard materials in the packaging industry. In addition, envimelt ID2108 has a significantly improved flow-ability compared to comparable biodegradable injection moulding grades.
